Can You Shower With an Oura Ring?

You can wear your Oura Ring 24/7; we all know that. However, can you shower wearing an Oura ring? Is it safe? We know you have these questions in your mind, especially if you are a new user. Worry not. We will answer the questions and let you know when not to wear your ring to protect it from damage.

Can You Shower With an Oura Ring?

Yes, you can safely wear your Oura ring in the shower. You can wear it not only in the shower but also when you are in ice baths or hot baths. The Oura ring has the ability to work in extreme temperature conditions ranging from -10–52°C / 14–125°F.

In addition, it is water resistant up to 100 meters, meaning you can wear it when you are in diving activities as well.

That said, you should strictly keep in mind that it is not 100% waterproof. Also, it won’t perform well under high-pressure water. Although it has what it takes to handle water well, prolonged exposure to water, especially with harsh soap materials, shampoos, and conditioners, can hamper the longevity of the device.

Harsh shampoos and conditioners might not work well with oura rings

Precautions When Wearing an Oura Ring In Water

It’s important to follow these detailed precautions when wearing your Oura ring in water. So take a minute and read these vigilantly.

  • The Oura ring has a water resistance rating of up to 100 meters (328 feet). This means it can handle splashes, and brief water submersion but is not suitable for high-pressure water activities, as mentioned.
  • Avoid directing high-pressure water jets at the ring while showering.
  • Prolonged exposure to hot water can affect the ring’s materials and internal components.
  • Minimize the exposure to chlorinated water. Rinse the ring with fresh water and dry it thoroughly after such exposure.
  • Harsh chemicals in soaps, shampoos, and conditioners can accumulate on the ring. This can cause potential interference with your Oura ring sensors. So, it is best to remove the ring during such water-related activities.

What Activities Should I Avoid While Wearing My Oura Ring?

As promised, here are some activities where we recommend avoid wearing an Oura ring.

Weightlifting

Although the Oura ring suits many gym activities, it might not be the best choice when you do weightlifting. We say this because weightlifting involves heavy weights, and it usually puts pressure on your fingers.

This excessive pressure can cause damage to the ring as well as to your fingers when wearing it for weightlifting. It would be the same for contact sports such as boxing, as it can cause physical damage.

Certain Water Activities

Yes, although we said that it could bear water environments, but that doesn’t necessarily suggest you can wear the Oura ring for all water activities. For example, it might not be ideal for high-pressure water environments such as deep-water diving.

In addition, using the Oura ring in chlorinated pools is also something that you should try to minimize. Extended exposure to chlorinated water can degrade the materials of the ring over time.

High-temperature Environments

If you go above the tolerable temperatures, it can cause damage to the electronic parts of the ring. Avoid placing the ring near open flames, stovetops, or in environments where it might be exposed to high temperatures for extended periods.

Labor Intensive Tasks

Further, wearing the ring during activities that involve heavy manual labor, such as construction work, cannot be approved of as the ring could be subjected to significant stress. Repeatedly banging or knocking the ring against hard surfaces can cause scratches and damage.

Also, we do not recommend wearing the Oura ring with other jewelry in your hand. When there are rings and other jewelry, they have the potential to be rubbed with each other. This can lead to scratches on your Oura ring and loss of aesthetic value as well as effectiveness.

Can You Wash Dishes Wearing Oura Ring?

Yes, you can wash dishes while wearing an Oura ring, but there are some important precautions to keep in mind. Brief exposure to water while washing dishes won’t harm the ring. However, dish soap and harsh cleaners can cause issues in the long run.

Make sure to clean the ring with a soft cloth and mild soap to remove any soap residue after washing dishes. This is important as moisture trapped under the ring can affect sensor performance and cause skin irritation.

Can I Wear My Oura Ring While Swimming?

Yes, you can wear your Oura ring while swimming, but there are specific precautions you should follow. Let us explain them as dos and don’ts for better understanding.

Dos

  • After swimming in chlorinated pools or saltwater, rinse your Oura ring thoroughly with fresh water.
  • After rinsing, dry the ring thoroughly with a soft, lint-free cloth.
  • Ensure no moisture is trapped under the ring at the completion
  • It’s best to limit the duration of your swimming sessions to reduce prolonged exposure to water.
  • A proper fit of the Oura ring prevents it from slipping off in the water. Finding a lost Oura ring can be really challenging.

Don’ts

  • Avoid wearing the ring during high-impact water activities such as water skiing or surfing.
  • Avoid rough pool edges when swimming to prevent physical damage
  • Avoid extended swimming sessions with the ring

Is it Safe to Wear My Oura Ring in a Sauna?

We do not recommend wearing your Oura ring in a sauna or steam room. As you would know by now, prolonged exposure to high temperatures and humidity can cause issues to your Oura ring.

Saunas and steam rooms often exceed the temperature limits the ring is built to withstand. This can hamper the functionality of your reading, eventually ending up with inaccurate readings. To ensure the longevity and performance of your Oura ring, it’s best to remove it before entering a sauna and store it in a safe place.
